Launch Event October 2008

The borough’s new Local Involvement Network (LINk) was launched by the Mayor Councillor Helen Lee Parsons at a meeting attended by over a hundred local people and groups with an interest in care and health services. Also present were PCT and Council representatives including leader, Cllr Serge Lourie. Richmond upon Thames LINk provides opportunities for local people and organisations to work together to influence and improve the health and social care services provided for the borough.

Margaret Dangoor, Chair of its steering committee told the packed meeting: “Our first duty is to explain the role of Richmond upon Thames LINk so that people really understand how they can be involved and what a fantastic opportunity this presents for the local community to have their say in how local social and health services are delivered. We hope that local residents and community groups will seize this opportunity and join our LINk so that it becomes a truly active, influential and representative network for services provided for residents of our borough.”

The borough’s two MPs have both welcomed the new LINk.

Susan Kramer MP for Richmond Park says: “I know that some people feel weary from the frequent changes in organisational structure - but the LINk scheme really does provide an opportunity for local people to act as a critical friend. This is our opportunity to create a partnership which works for the improvements we want and need. I am really excited about the opportunities presented by Richmond LINk and I hope our residents will be too.”

Vincent Cable MP for Twickenham commented: “One of the greatest strengths of my Twickenham constituency and of our borough is the strength and depth of voluntary commitment in the field of health and care. From the volunteer networks like HANDS and Whitton Network to the voluntary sector centres like Homelink and the Greenwood Centre and the Friends of Teddington memorial hospital to the campaigning groups fighting for mental health and other services there is a wealth of expertise and energy. I hope LINK will strengthen the infrastructure to support these efforts."

Richmond upon Thames LINk will have a range of powers and will be able to directly influence care and health services commissioned for the borough. Whilst it will work with existing voluntary and community groups, the LINk and its support team will be looking to encourage widespread involvement through awareness raising activities.

Dr Sinead O’Brien, Director of Primary Care, Nursing and Integrated Governance, Richmond & Twickenham Primary Care Trust, commented at the meeting:
“We welcome the development of the LINk as it will provide a way of achieving meaningful public engagement when we are planning new services for our residents.”

A LINk Support Team is based at Richmond Council for Voluntary Services which has been appointed to provide administrative and organisation support.
